2009 NYC Gay Pride March
Published on June 26, 2009 at 4:52 PM by kenneth | Filed under Calendar Events, Unaffiliated Events | No Comments| June 28, 2009
| 12:00 PM | to | 6:00 PM |
2009 Grand Marshals: Dustin Lance Black, Cleve Jones, Ann Kronenberg & Hon. NYS Gov. David Paterson
Route: 52nd & 5th avenue, down Fifth Avenue, ending at Greenwich Avenue
The March began as an annual civil rights demonstration beginning the year after the Stonewall Riots in 1970. Over the years its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to the illness, violence and neglect. It has also evolved to include being a celebration of our lives and our community.
To watch the March step-off you should be in the 50s or upper 40s on 5th Avenue. For larger crowds and high energy, anywhere in the village is ideal. For smaller crowds, many enjoy watching in the 30s, 20s, and teens on 5th Avenue.
This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are necessary. More info here.

From the NYC Sex Blogger Calendar:
Who: Carol Queen visits from San Francisco, joined by Rachel Kramer Bussel, Elizabeth Wood, Audacia Ray, and Sinclair Sexsmith!
When: Monday, June 8, 6-9 PM (reading will start between 7:30-8, last about an hour).
Why: Carol Queen’s coming through town and wants to collaborate with her friends Rachel and Elizabeth to make a space for connecting, schmoozing, touching base, and furthering plans for sex-positive world domination! Her SF nonprofit The Center for Sex & Culture has hosted Rachel Kramer Bussel, worked with Elizabeth Wood on her online community Sex in the Public Square, and has plans to expand its educational and cultural offerings online as soon as we can (if we can’t afford NY real estate, at least we can visit you via your computers). Come mingle with your fellow NY sex people and meet some new ones, then enjoy a reading that will surely be more salaciously smart/sexy brain candy than most people ever get on a Monday (and in some cases, sadly, EVER).

Film Opening: Sex Positive – The Richard Berkowitz Story
Published on June 4, 2009 at 4:41 PM by maymay | Filed under Calendar Events, Unaffiliated Events | No Comments| June 12, 2009 |
On June 12th, the S&M and sexuality documentary film Sex Positive—The Richard Berkowitz Story opens at the Quad Cinema on 13th Street here in Manhattan. David Oliver Cohen, the film’s producer, wrote to CV to tell us a little about the film:
The film explores the origins of safe sex through the eyes of Richard Berkowitz, a former S&M sex worker turned AIDS activist and writer.
The film is an essential educational tool for younger generations who have no real concept of how safe sex came about during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. Richard Berkowitz is credited as co-writing the first safe sex manual in the world, “How to Have Sex in an Epidemic,” with activist Michael Callen. Richard is still around and is actively spreading his message about safe sex.
There is a large portion of the film that deals directly with Richard’s work as a dominant-for-hire.
(Emphasis added.)
I first heard about this documentary when Clarisse Thorn published her interview with the star and brought up the very good point, what does it mean to be sex positive? Safer sex practices such as the use of condoms were not always so endearingly looked upon as symbols of sex positive activism. In fact, decades ago, the opposite was true and sex involving physical barriers was exceptionally stigmatized.
As David says, the film Sex Positive is an exceptional educational tool because it documents the history of how we got to where we are. I’d encourage you to see and support the film, watch the trailer, and maybe even bring your friends along and start a discussion about sex positivity.
Lesbian Sex Mafia: Spanking Techniques from Sensual to Discipline with Lady Sabrina
Published on June 4, 2009 at 9:59 AM by Viviane | Filed under Calendar Events, Unaffiliated Events | No Comments| June 19, 2009
| 8:00 PM | to | 10:00 PM |
In a few weeks, the Lesbian Sex Mafia will be hosting Lady Sabrina as she teaches us about the intricacies of spanking.
Some people think of spanking as the least challenging of BDSM skills, requiring the least knowledge. It’s not flamboyant like singletails or edgy like knife play so it can’t be as exciting. However, in the proper hands, spanking can be a slow, sensuous climb to orgasm or a sharp, harsh discipline. It can be used to create a loving, hands-on scene, reduce the strongest person to tears or re-create a cherished fantasy.
Lady Sabrina will show how spanking can be a valuable tool in your arsenal as she discusses the different styles of spanking, value of role play, safety and use of toys.
Where: The LGBT Center, 208 West 13th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues
Cost: $5 for members; $10 for non-members
About Lady Sabrina
Lady Sabrina has been a member of the BDSM community for over 15 years presenting for TES, Knot4Everyone, DSF, Black Rose, John Jay College, PEP and others. Museum of Sex After-Hours: Overcoming the ‘Bitch’ Stereotype of Dominant Women
Published on May 19, 2009 at 10:04 PM by maymay | Filed under Calendar Events, Unaffiliated Events | No Comments| May 26, 2009

In both popular and underground culture, the representation of dominant women has long been monotonous in both subtly and explicitly negative ways. Arguably the most well known of these representations is the “bitch” stereotype, which defines an extremely narrow and off-putting attitude for dominant women to prescribe to so that they can be considered, well, dominant. However, in reality, there are just as many ways to be a dominant woman as there are dominant women—and there are a significant number more of you than looking around a typical fetish club would have you believe.
Next Tuesday, the Museum of Sex will be hosting Midori to speak about this issue.
In today’s world, being a strong female is often equated with being a bitch. On May 26, 2009 at 7:00 PM, let Midori teach you how to overcome the bitch stereotype and find a sexy and effective style of dominance that is authentically you.
Using a special technique she handcrafted, Midori will help you find your inner power femme archetype, allowing you to pursue erotic fulfillment in sensual power play. Not your typical how-to class, you will discover the difference between constructive and destructive desires guiding you towards ways of bringing more sexual satisfaction for both you and your partner.
About the presenter:
An acclaimed writer and lecturer on a wide range of sexual topics, Midori has a degree in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and vast indispensable experience as a pioneering San Francisco sex educator. Midori is known for her humanistic, humorous and warm classes that help people to spice up their sex lives and encourage self discovery and personal growth. A regular advice columnist for Men’s Health, she has appeared on HBO and BBC, and has been featured in Vogue, Playboy, Der Spiegel, Cosmopolitan and more. She is also the author of The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage and Wild Side Sex.
CV Meeting: Kate Bornstein, “Hello, Cruel World”

For our last meeting of the semester, Conversio Virium’s going out swinging—not literally, but equally fun. Kate Bornstein will be presenting at 9 PM, preceded by a potluck dinner at 8 PM (we’ve got utensils, water, and salad, so bring entrees and dessert!). Like all our regular meetings, this event is free and open to the public. Bring your friends!
Kate Bornstein is a gender theorist, author, playwright, and performance artist. She has toured at over 120 colleges giving presentations on sex, gender, and alternatives to teen suicide.
This meeting will not be in our usual location, but rather in 202 ALTSCHUL on Barnard College campus (view a map of Barnard’s campus). Kate Bornstein will be presenting “Hello, Cruel World”:
“Sometimes, whatever it is that gives you the most joy, pleasure or relief also gets you into the deepest trouble, especially when you try to explain it to other people. Like when you love someone you’re not supposed to love. Or when the way you express yourself makes other people queasy. As harmless as you feel you’re being, people may still think you’re bad, wrong or immoral. This is a workshop in which Kate suggests irreverent alternatives to suffering as a 21st Century outlaw. The workshop is based on Kate’s shiny new book, ‘Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws’.”
Help us promote Kate’s presentation! RSVP on the Facebook event and send it to your friends. (You do not need to RSVP on Facebook to attend.) You can also print out this poster and stick it up around the city.
This event brought to you in conjunction with Q and GendeRevolution.

How can you maintain consent when the idea of a scene is to imitate non-consent? Join us as we address these and other questions.

CV is joined by Lady Arielle, presenting on erotic hypnosis and its amazing potential to expand the mind and the world of kink play.
302 Hamilton on Columbia University’s main campus.
Dominants, do you want to exercise control over your submissives merely by using your words? Do you desire to see your subs experience the full measure of your power without lifting a finger? Then come to see this demo. Submissives, would you like to deepen your dedication to your masters and explore your fantasies in way that you never have before? Would you like to break down the barriers and inhibitions that are preventing you from experiencing the pure and deep submission that you so crave? Do you dare to turn yourself over to a mercilessly erotic and manipulative Domina? Then participate in my demonstration.
In this demo, I will show how hypnosis could be used in BDSM Scenes. I will also discuss subspace, rope-space and other subconscious phenomena. Participation will be rewarded… with the sensations of pain, extreme pleasure, tickles, taste and anything in between. Volunteer… if you dare.
“Lady Arielle is a Natural Born Dominatrix, originally from Moscow, Russia. She is both a Lifestyle Domme as well as an independent Pro Domme, currently practicing in Manhattan. Lady Arielle is a Glamour Domina with a Mensa IQ and a sense of strong Russian Discipline. She is a Queen of textures and uses many ‘pervertables’ in her BDSM art. Lady Arielle had presented BDSM demos at most of the Jeff Mach’s Wicked Faire Events, at Paddles (the only NYC S&M club), at club openings, and The Baroness’ parties. She was invited to teach 2 classes at the next DomConLA in Los Angeles in May 2009.”
CV Meeting: Religion, Spirituality, and Kink

We are joined this week by Dark Teddy Bear, who will be blaspheming (maybe) for our pleasure.
The connections between kink and spirituality are legion. The Christian monks of the middle ages, flagellating themselves in penitence; the woman in a latex nun’s outfit, threatening her naughty students; the kinkster marveling at how his first experience of subspace reminds him of his favorite moments from synagogue; the scene so powerful it opens spiritual doors, making the scene itself a chance for connection with the divine. Take part in a presentation and conversation on the ways in which kink and spirituality intersect.
Our presenter is an ordained minister with many years in the scene who has studied the interconnections of sexuality, religion and kink. Some of the topics to be covered include: intersections between religion and kink; religious play & religious fetish scenes; pro-kink viewpoints within different religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Paganism, historically and in modern practice; parallels in the nature and ethics of power between pastor and congregant and dominant and submissive.
The presentation will include time for questions and discussion.
