Tristan Taormino of the Voice comments on this case in her Pucker Up column. She will actually be on campus for Sexhibition, date to follow. If anyone remembers the article on the back of my puppy handout, she is the author of it. She is a wonderful writer and figure in the kink world. I'm certainly going to be there.

This comment could be attached to almost any post on the site, but I think it fits here just as well as anywhere else. I have a sort of question as to why S/M stands for "sadomasochism", and not "sadism and masochism." Until joining CV, I had thought it stood for the latter. My hypothesis as to why "sadism and masochism" is inappropriate and inaccurate is that true "sadism" (as derived from the writings of de Sade) does not require the safety, sanity, and consent of the parties involved. Rather, "sadomasochism" implies that the type of "sadism" that occurs during S/M play is contingent on the fantasies and limits of the masochist, and is in fact desirable and entirely consensual, even through what some might consider extreme situations. I was wondering if anyone else had an opinion (or the actual reason) why S/M stands for "sadomasochism", and what you all think.
